Con este álbum (el Volúmen 1) nacía una de las sagas de compilaciones más interesantes y longevas de la actualidad y uno de los sellos más representativos de la electrónica europea de finales de los 90 y principios del siglo XXI: Mole Listening Pearls. Sólo por esta doble característica ya se debería considerar a Science fiction jazz como un álbum histórico, como una edición muy señalada, pero es que, además, es una exquisita selección, a cargo de Minus 8, de trece temas electrónicos. Pese a ese impreciso título que, en todo caso, sugiere que se trata de una compilación de jazz electrónico (science fiction lo asocio con futuro, así que sería algo así como future jazz = nu-jazz), la selección de temas tiene mucho que ver con la de Michael Reinboth para la saga Future sound of jazz. De hecho, se puede afirmar que Science fiction jazz es el equivalente para Mole Listening Pearls de la saga Future sounds of jazz para Compost Records. Ambas han contribuido a dar una notable popularidad a los sellos que las editan y, pese a sus títulos, no incluyen únicamente artistas y grupos que se asocian con la escena nu-jazz, jazz-house..., sino que seleccionan cortes de trip-hop, de drum and bass, de house o de techno en los que, en mayor o menos medida, se aprecia influencia del jazz. De hecho, en Science fiction jazz se incluye un tema, Journey, de The Gentle People, del que se puede escuchar un remix (a cargo de Aphex Twin), en Future sound of jazz, Vol. 2.
